COVID-19 Updates from Pastor Eric  (below)

Dec. 16, 2020

Dear Federated Family,

Can you believe that next week is Christmas?!

As you finish your shopping and wrapping along with finalizing your own plans for another very different holiday celebration, I hope you will join us as you’re able in welcoming the Light and Love of God into our weary world and lives.

Please see below for the announcement regarding an in-person, socially-distanced Contemplative Christmas opportunity around the nativity scene on the church lawn, along with one regarding our virtual Christmas Eve service. I look forward to sharing in these with you as you feel comfortable and are able.

Together on the Advent Journey,

Pastor Eric

Dear Federated Family,

Good morning! I'm looking forward to worshipping with you all at 10am on our Facebook Page via Facebook Live.

Today is the Second Sunday of Advent: we will be lighting the candle of peace on the advent wreath as well as sharing Holy Communion, so don't forget to have a piece of bread and juice--or whatever your substitutes are--on hand with you. As I light a candle in the sanctuary, I also invite you to bring a candle into your worshipping space this morning and light it as a reminder that the Light of God's Peace meets us where we are and connects us all.

Below are the links to join us for coffee hour as well as our Advent opportunities throughout the week. "See" you soon!

From Jan Scheffers, Federated Preschool Director

Dear Friends of Federated Church ,

I worked long hours Monday taking mulch from the parking lot to the playground before the snow predicted on Tuesday. Since the mulch arriving was a surprise to me and changed my plans, I was a little frustrated. But when I returned home I found the most beautiful fall fresh flower arrangement along with a  card and gift to open. The gift contained a Willow Tree angel—Magnolia, a gathering of blessings. The front of the card stated, “God’s love is all around us,” and contained such heart-warming words and affirmation for my passion at preschool. I collect the Willow Angels as they are such a precious piece of art. I so enjoy fresh flowers and the beauty of nature. The best gift was the card filled with words that I can read any day to fill my “love tank.” Thank you so much!

Love, Jan

From DeKalb County Community Gardens, one of our community partners

Dear Federated Church,

Without your generous contribution, hundreds of DeKalb County residents would not have access to healthy food when their situations jeopardize feeding themselves and their families. Thanks to you, DeKalb County Community Gardens remains committed to working faithfully to curb hunger in our community in these current unstable times.

Thank you for your very generous ongoing sponsorship of the Grow Mobile. With our partnership, this enables DCCG and you to contonie to be frontline responders in helping to provide food needs in our communities. DCCG’s impacts to the COVID-19 crisis in our community since mid-March includes:

  • Our Grow Mobile and Genoa Area Community Food Hub has served 9,857 households (31,713 individuals; 4,761 individuals 60+ years of age; 577 home deliveries)
  • 371,225 pounds of food has been purchased or received via direct connect programs
  • 75% of residents coming to our Grow Mobile pop-up pantries are first-time clients of food pantries

Thank you so much for caring for our families, friends, and neighbors,

Nov. 18, 2020

"Each of you is called to give only as you have made up your mind--not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work."

2 Corinthians 9:7-8

Dear Federated Family,

On Sunday, we heard moving testimonies in worship from Randi and Araceli. I've shared them again below--I hope you will take a moment to listen to them.

As you hear their stories, I invite you to also consider how Federated Church has blessed you over the years, and how you will commit in the year ahead to supporting our vital, life-giving ministries with your own gifts of time, talent, and money. What a gift and privilege it is to share in this holy work of being fed so that we can feed and nourish the world around us. As we've seen this year, our ministries are more important now than ever--and perhaps more than ever, they are also reaching a world far beyond the walls of our building.

I hope you'll join us for worship this Sunday--Pledge Dedication Sunday, and the final Sunday of our Stewardship Season--as we dedicate our pledges, hear more about how God has been moving in and through us this year, and look toward our future together.

Together on the Journey,

Pastor Eric

NEW UPDATES & INVITATIONS

Office Update

As you may know, Liz has been out of the office last week and this week with Covid. She and Bill are both struggling to fully recover, so please keep them in your prayers. This also means that we are a little behind in the office, so if you've called or emailed the office and haven't heard a response, that's why. Please be in touch with Pastor Eric if there is anything that needs to be addressed more urgently--email: reveric@fedsycamore.org; phone: (815)797-2250

Stewardship Season

We hope you’ll continue to join us this season in reflecting on how "love" might (re)shape the ministries to which we pledge our time, talents and treasures in the year ahead!  In case you didn’t receive it by mail, you can find our initial stewardship letter / pledge card attached.

Advent Study

Wed.'s—Dec. 2nd - 23rd, 6-7 pm via Zoom

Believe it or not, Advent is almost among us! Watch next week for a full list of opportunities for making this season a meaningful one even in this most odd & challenging year.

A 4-week study on the "Names for the Messiah" is the first opportunity. Using this short, accessible, and provocative book by Walter Brueggemann (one of the world's greatest biblical scholars and theologians, and that's not just my opinion!) we will explore the world-altering meaning of these titles for Jesusin their original context, and how they might likewise speak to our world--beyond the nostalgia of Christmas pageants and carols.
