scripture: Isaiah 35:1-10; Matthew 11:2-11; James 5:7-10
In Advent, we wait and prepare for the birth of God. Perhaps the preparation to which we are called is to inviting God in to destroy the things that are destroying us, trusting that God picks up all the fractured and fragmented pieces and redeems them by molding us into something profoundly new.
scripture: Isaiah 11:1-10; Matthew 3:1-12; Romans 15:4-13
"Advent makes new people," the famous theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer once wrote. In contrast to the shallow optimism of self-help, Advent reaches into the depths of our broken world with a defiant Hope that dares to proclaim that the forces of darkness and death do not have the last word: healing, love and life do.
scripture: Isaiah 2:1-5; Matthew 24:36-44; Romans 13:11-14
Advent begins not with "Joy to the World," but with a jarring cry to "wake up" to the pain of our world. This sermon explores how Advent invites us to a counter-cultural path of facing this pain in ways that heal rather than tear down.
