The Federated Church of Sycamore
What We Do
Community Engagement
The Federated Church has a long history of supporting families and the youth of the Sycamore community. The Federated Preschool will celebrate it's 50th Anniversary in 2018. It long has been a special resource available to the Sycamore/DeKalb communities. The Church has sponsored Boy Scout Troop 16 for over 60 years. Recently we welcomed the Harambee Percussion Ensemble to be in-residence at Federated Church. This student-based ensemble was created and is lead by two members of our congregation. Harambee provides a unique opportunity for the youth of DeKalb County to learn musical skills as well as experience the importance of teamwork and discipline in group organizations. Finally, Dutton Hall is made available for use (moderate fee) by outside organization, e.g., AA.
Community Benevolence
The Federated Church also has a long history of helping the less fortunate and those in need when possible. The Annual Thrift Sale held each spring makes used clothing and household goods available to the community. The proceeds are used for backpacks/school supplies (below). The Sue Lyon Book Sale has been held annually in June: it provides a wide variety of used adult, youth, and children's books available to the public very cheaply. The funds obtained from both of these sales are contributed to local nonprofit organziations. Each summer the church provides backpacks and school supplies to local aid organizations (Salvation Army, Hope Haven, Safe Passage) for distribution to students in the county who need assistance obtaining these supplies. Feed My Sheep: on the first Sunday of each month, we collect nonperishable items that are delivered to our local food pantry.
Music at Federated
The Music Program, under the direction of Gary Mattin, is a critical component of our life at Federated Church. Gary directs the Chancel Choir. They perform at weekly worship services, except during the summer months, with special choral presentations during church holiday periods. The Handbell Choir performs regularly, directed by Marilyn Montzka.
